Rocky Mountain wildlife: Bison cow and calf (Bison bison) running through snow, Wyoming, USA.

This calf was born very late in the season. It's chances of surviving winter are not fantastic.

Road Ecology Blog: Marcel Huijser pulls cargo sled on cross country skis, Wyoming, USA.

Carrying camera gear on your back is no fun when skiing or snow shoeing. The extra weight makes you sink through the different snow layers resulting in tough going. So, I put together this cargo sled with home made pull poles to make things a bit easier. The pull poles consist of rope fed through PVC pipe and with a loop on each end. One end attaches to the sled, the other to carabiners that connect to a waist belt that was originally designed for a backpack. The PVC tubes are stiff enough to keep the sled from crashing into you when going down a slope. Crossing the poles increases stability when going up or down a hill.

Rocky Mountain Wildlife: Wolf (Canis lupus), approaching on snow covered river Wyoming, USA.

Sometimes you get what you want. The snow on the frozen river made for a perfect canvas for this wolf. I had spotted the wolf who seemed to be traveling on and along the frozen river. I took position on a hill overlooking the river and waited for the wolf to approach. The snow left no distraction whatsoever. The wolf and a set of tracks are the only noticeable features. I do not know what animal left the tracks in front of the wolf. The wolf was following the same path though; perhaps the wolf was the animal that left these tracks earlier and it was now simply following the same tracks back.
