Rocky Mountain wildlife: Newborn bison (Bison bison) calf with umbilical cord still visible, Wyoming, USA. Of course it is nearly impossible to make an image of a baby bison that is not adorable. However, in this image I particularly like the repetitive element of the hind legs of the baby bison and the mama bison, and the simple overall composition with no distractions present.

Rocky Mountain landscapes: Meandering creek in bright green grassland in spring, Wyoming, USA. Really nice situation... rare combination of a meandering creek, just the right time of year when the grass is bright green, and the proximity of a hill in just the right location. The hill allowed me to point the camera down and show the meandering creek and surrounding grassland.

Tufas at sunrise, South Tufa area, Mono Lake, California, USATufas at sunrise, South Tufa area, Mono Lake, California, USA. Tufas are formed when underwater springs rich in calcium mix with lakewater rich in carbonates. As a result calcium carbonate-limestone is formed around the spring. In time the deposits grow into rocks and towers. This process only takes place underwater. The tufas at Mono Lake are exposed because water levels dropped after 1941 when water diversions began. Water levels were allowed to rise again since 1994, but they are still about 2 m (9 ft) below the goal.
