Montana wildlife: White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the rut
White-tailed deer buck (Odocoileus virginianus), Montana, USA. This buck showed up at just the right time and place. I was in a gully and angled the camera up when the buck appeared on the ridge. The open aperture made the buck stand out with blurred yellow grasses in the foreground and snow covered mountains in the background.

Road Ecology Blog: wildlife jump-out, near Havre, Montana, USA
This wildlife jump-out or escape ramp is located near Havre, Montana, USA. It allows animals that are trapped in the fenced road corridor to walk up to the height of the fence and jump down to safety. Of course the jump-outs should be low enough so that animals will readily jump down. They should be high enough though to discourage the animals from jumping up into the fenced road corridor. It is mostly a Mexican holiday (Día de los Muertos) but nowadays it is celebrated in many countries around the world. Hunting, Fishing, and perhaps wildlife viewing can produce an additional or alternative form of income in rural areas that have interesting landscapes or that have restored their native wildlife.

Sign: Land closed to prairie dog shooting, near Sun Prairie, Montana, USA
Some people refer to prairie dogs as "varmints" and they shoot them for recreational purposes. This culture is explored in the documentary "Varmints" by High Plains Films. I find it interesting, perhaps even unsettling, that signs are posted on land where the recreational killing of prairie dogs is NOT permitted.... This sign is at a prairie dog colony on the American Prairie Reserve, near Sun Prairie, Montana, USA.
