Road ecology blog: Electric mat associated at fence end, east of Payson, Arizona, USA
Electric mat (CrossTek™, formerly Electrobraid™) associated with an animal detection and driver warning system at a fence end, S.R. 260 east of Payson, Arizona, USA. The fence is a 2.4 m (8 ft) high electric fence (Electrobraid™ / CrossTek™). The fence and animal detection system reduced elk-vehicle collisions by 97%. The electric mat is embedded in the roadway. It encourages animals to cross the road straight and discourages them from wandering off in the fenced road corridor.
Depending on the design, traditional steel wildlife or cattle guards (double wide) can be a substantial barrier to ungulates, but they tend to be a poor barrier to bears. Electric mats seem to be a much greater barrier to bears. Click here for other images of the electric mat, wildlife guards and gates.

Southwest wildlife: El condor pasa. California condor (Gymnogyps californianus), USA
Southwest wildlife: El condor pasa. California condor (Gymnogyps californianus), Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA . Critically endangered (IUCN, 2013). The California condor went extinct in the wild in 1987 when all 22 remaining wild individuals were captured for a captive breeding program. Since 1991 the species has been reintroduced in northern Arizona and southern Utah, central and southern California, and northern Baja California. Despite a successful captive breeding and reintroduction program the California condor is still critically endangered with only about 400 individuals alive, including just over 200 in the wild.

North American landscapes: Ridges after sunset, Yavapai Point, South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, USA. I was looking for simple lines and repeating patterns... which is something that can be hard to find. The Grand Canyon has options though! :)
