Rocky Mountain Wildlife: Bison (Bison bison) walking in the snow, Wyoming, USA.

This type of image can only be made at a select few locations. Backgrounds that are fresh snow and snow only are fantastic, but hard to find. And of course the animals have to be in the right place, doing the right things, and the light needs to be just right too. Of course, "right" in this context means matching the idea I had as a photographer when I was planning for these images; the animals simply are where they are, they do what they do, and the light is whatever it is, and none of this has an actual wrong or right attached to it.

Poaching of wildlife is a substantial problem in Mongolia. The animal products are for both for domestic and foreign use. Wildlife is not just a food source; traditional  medicinal use, including Chinese medicine, also drives the poaching. A new road means greater access for poachers into the surrounding landscape. As it is, poachers drive roads, and when they spot wildlife they chase them with their cars and motorcycles and then shoot them. For vehicles to leave the road is especially common in Mongolia; there are few roads to begin with and it is considered normal to drive your vehicle just about anywhere in the deserts and grasslands. People seem to drive their vehicles pretty much the same way they ride horses. The trench shown in the image below is meant to discourage drivers from leaving the road "at will". This may then reduce disturbance to wildlife, including poaching. The trench is about 2 m wide and 1 m deep.

Travel: Gers and other buildings covered in coal dust and challenging living conditions at the settlement of Tsagaan khad (White Rock), north of Gashuun-Sukhait, Gobi, Mongolia.

Several hundred people seem to live in the settlement of Tsagaan khad (White Rock). Based on the conversations I had when I was there, the reason Tsagaan khad exists is because of the nearby coal transfer station. At the transfer station coal is unloaded from Mongolian coal trucks into Chinese trucks who haul the coal the last 15 km or so through the Small Gobi B Special Protected Area in Mongolia to the border with China and beyond. The people in the settlement make a living by selling goods and proving services of various nature to the passing truck drivers. In addition to social problems, the environmental problems seem substantial. Tsagaan khad is close to the coal transfer station and thus the village is covered in coal dust. In addition, the trucks that pass along the unpaved gravel road generate enormous dust clouds. The social and environmental problems make Tsagaan khad a place with a post-apocalyptic feel.
