The images typically relate to landscapes and wildlife, but I also blog about photos of highways and mitigation measures for wildlife or road ecology in general. Road ecology blog: Unpaved coal haul road associated with the Tavan Tolgoi coal mine, Mongolia
Road ecology blog: The unpaved coal haul road associated with the Tavan Tolgoi coal mine with coal trucks in Small Gobi B strictly protected area just north of Gashuun Sukhait (border Mongolia/China), Gobi, Ömnögovi, Mongolia. In the foreground (left corner) is the road from Oyu Tolgoi (mine site) to Gashuun Sukhait. Behind the dust from the trucks is a paved toll road for the coal trucks that seems to receive much less use than the gravel road that does not require a toll and that does not have an enforced weight limit for the coal trucks.

Ancient foot trap (khogtse), National Museum, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Ancient leg-hold trap or foot trap (khogtse), National Museum, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. These traps were buried and anchored (or frozen) into the ground at the end of drive lines made out of rock cairns or lines of rocks. The drive lines funneled the animals to the place where traps were buried. The traps are designed to trap ungulates such as gazelles or Tibetan antelope and appear to have been used on the Tibetan plateau and also in Mongolia. Once trapped the hunters could approach and kill the animals.

Travel: Soyombo symbol on fence at Mongolian Parliament building, Sükhbaatar Square, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The soyombo symbol can also be found on the Mongolian flag. The elements in the symbol represent (top to bottom): Fire, sun, moon, arows (triangles), honesty and justice (two horizontal rectangles), man and woman (yin-yang symbol), unity and strength (vertical rectangles).
