Brazilian wildlife: Burrow of giant armadillo (Priodontes maximus), Parque Nacional da Serra da Canastra, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Giant armadillos are quite rare and spend most of their lives under the ground sleeping and eating tree roots. They are hard to see and have an appearance from a time gone by a long time ago... these animals weigh up to 30-40 Kg or more!

Brazilian landscapes: Tanquã wetland under severe threat of new dam.
Thunderstorm with dark clouds over Tanquã wetland, Piracicaba river, São Paulo, Brazil. This wetland is a very important area for birds. It is currently under severe threat. There is a proposal to build a new dam on the Piracicaba river that would flood the area and that would make this section of the river more navigable for ships. The loss of the wetland will not be compensated through creating similar wetlands elsewhere. Without people and organizations speaking out on behalf of the wetland and the birds and the fishermen that depend on it, this wetland may disappear. Though this wetland is very important for birds and some ornithologists have compiled species lists and conducted bird counts, it is not well known, and not enough people and organizations are stepping up to protect it. There is both literary and figuratively a dark sky above Tanquã!
If you would like to help remove the threat to the Tanquã wetland, including the birds and the people that depend on it, you can express your opinion to CETESB or write an e-mail to [email protected] . CETESB is the organization that will decide on the environmental permit that is required to permanently flood this important bird area.

Road ecology blog: Hollow dirt road (erosion), near Casca d'Anta, Parque Nacional da Serra da Canastra, Minas Gerais, Brazil.
The road is much lower than the surrounding landscape. All the "missing" dirt has eroded away. Part of the "missing dirt" is likely to have ended up in a stream or river.

At night, the moths are attracted to the lights of the guard house. During the day they rest on the stone walls.
