Brazilian wildlife: Black-striped capuchin (Cebus libidinosus), adult male, Parque Nacional das Emas, Goiás, Brazil.

It was getting dark when walking through this gallery forest along the river. We heard lots of noise and retreated thinking a herd of white-lipped peccaries was approaching (they can be quite dangerous). However, it was a group of black-striped capuchin monkeys! Several individuals, including this adult male, came close to check us out. Violent shaking of tree branches and their facial expression seemed to signal we were not welcome and that we should go away.

This image also illustrates what modern professional cameras are capable of.... photographing with very little natural light when it is almost dark! For this image I cranked up the ISO to 25,600 and I still had a relatively long shutter speed (1/250) with full opening.

Exhibit at Freshwater Studio  

Friday 6 February 5-8 pm

Some of my images are on display at Freshwater Studio, Montana Building, 101 E Broadway in Missoula.

Join me this First Friday 6 February at Freshwater Studio 5-8 pm. Bethanie and I are back from Brazil! Stop by and say "hi", and see some cool Brazilian wildlife images on a monitor during First Friday.

Freshwater Studio is run by Bob Montgomery and the gallery hosts some really cool work by several painters and photographers. Bob is also a specialty printer and custom framer.

The gallery is located on Broadway just a few steps east from Higgins (same entrance as Bhavana).

Rocky Mountain wildlife: Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) wrestling in the snow, Montana, USA (captive animals).

I photographed these grizzly bears at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone. The bears at this facility used to be either "nuisance bears" or they were cubs of a "nuisance bear". The animals were removed from the wild to avoid potentially serious incidents with humans. In many cases animals that get into conflict with people are killed, but these animals ended up in the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center. The bears are fed throughout the year and therefore they do not hibernate. This gave me an opportunity to photograph them in the middle of winter in the snow. The animals shown in the image are "play-flighting"... they were having a (snow)ball!

Rocky Mountain wildlife: Wolf (Canis lupus) (captive animal), in snow, Montana, USA. I photographed this animal at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone. Her name is Adara from the High Country Pack. She was born in captivity in 2009. I prefer animals to be free, but zoos or similar facilities have played and continue to play a role in society. Fortunately modern facilities tend provide more space for the animals and provide novel stimuli (environmental enrichment) to prevent or reduce stereotypical behavior. Here I took advantage of the opportunity to make images at close range and with a lot of detail... something that cannot or should not be done in the wild, at least not under normal circumstances. I positioned myself so that there would be nothing but snow in the background. The snow erased all traces of the enclosure.

Road ecology blog: Snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park.

The situation with snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park has been much improved over the last decade. Two stroke engines were commonplace but these machines are very noisy, pollute the environment substantially, and the emissions are unhealthy, especially for park personnel at entrance booths. Currently only four stroke engines are allowed. The four stroke engines are much more quiet, pollute less, and do not put the health of park personnel at the entrances at so much risk. In addition, snowmobiles can now only enter with a guide (one guide for a group of 10 snowmobiles at a maximum) and there are strict rules on how to drive and behave, especially around wildlife. This has much reduced irresponsible thrill seeking behavior and disturbance to wildlife that do not have energy to spare in the winter months. Personally, I prefer a snow coach.  Snow coaches are much warmer, you can bring more gear (including skis), you get to know other people in the snowcoach, and you have a guide that drives you while you eat a sandwich or drink your tea. While a snowmobile may seem to offer more "freedom of movement" it really does not as you need to always pay attention to the guide and the snowmobiles in front of you and follow strict rules. This takes away from the time you have to look around, enjoy the landscape and look for wildlife.
