Rocky Mountain wildlife: Northern river otters (Lontra canadensis), Wyoming, USA. We had been talking about otters for days... to see and photograph them on the ice and in the snow. On the third day it happened! Three otters (one is not visible in this image) spent 39 minutes catching fish right in front of us. They were coming up through a narrow ice free zone in the river. We typically didn't see much of the fish other than a glimpse of a head or tail, but they must have consumed dozens of fish. While the otters were aware of our presence they didn't seem to care much. They kept diving for fish and then they would come up on the ice to eat them. It was interesting to see how they climbed out of the water and slipped back in without any effort. They also groomed themselves. The grooming included rubbing their chin and rolling their entire body on the snow and ice.
