Road ecology blog: Wildlife warning sign, Montana, USA. Wildlife warning signs do not result in fewer wildlife-vehicle collisions. Think about it; are you really going to reduce the speed of your vehicle or increase your attention for the next 51 miles? The vast majority of drivers can't even remember the sign they just passed! It is only when warning signs are specific in time and place that we see a reduction in wildlife-vehicle collisions. Examples of such signs are seasonal warning signs (e.g. along wildlife migration routes) and animal detection systems that provide a real time warning to drivers when animals are on or near the road at a specific location.
