Concrete median barriers along the SP 225, near Itirapina, São Paulo state, Brazil. Median barriers reduce the probability of head-on collisions. However, if no safe crossing opportunities are provided to wildlife they can increase the barrier effect of the road and the traffic substantially, perhaps even resulting in an absolute barrier separating wildlife populations.
