Painted stripes on pavement as a virtual cattle guard, Hwy 89A, east of Jacob Lake, Arizona, USA. It is hoped that livestock will mistake the painted lines for an actual cattle guard and that they will stay within their designated grazing unit. Painted lines are less expensive than an actual cattle guard and they also present less of a hazard to traffic and are more comfortable to drive across. Their effectiveness is doubtful though.

Bison (Bison bison), North Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, USA. These are descendents from a herd that was brought to the Greater Grand Canyon region in the early 1900’s to experiment with hybridization with cattle. The herd was sold to the state of Arizona in 1926. Arizona Game and Fish Department is responsible for the management of the herd. In 2000, the bison escaped from their enclosure in the Grand Canyon Game Preserve (GCNP) in House Rock Valley and migrated up onto the Kaibab Plateau. Since then the bison (now about 400 individuals) have been moving between the Kaibab National Forest and Grand Canyon National Park, but they still return to House Rock Valley in the summer to rut. In recent years fewer bison leave Grand Canyon National Park and stay there throughout the year. There are concerns about whether bison were historically present in the ecosystem, about cattle genes mixed in to the DNA of the bison ("beefalo" rather than buffalo or bison), and impacts on soil, water and vegetation.
