European wildlife: Muskox bull rolling (Ovibos moschatus) in winter, Dovrefjell, Norway. There is normally not much going on with the muskoxen: they are mostly either scraping snow and ice to get access to some food, or they ruminate. Sometimes the males fight; we got to see and photograph a lot of that during our previous visit. But the bull rolling over with one leg in the air before getting up was a rare sight; glad I was able to capture it.

The making of the muskoxen images: tent life. Winter camping is not exactly easy and everything takes much much longer than in summer. We spent a good chunk of time each day melting snow. It is important to have some "starter water" which we keep in a thermos. This allows the snow to melt rather than evaporate in the hot pan... evaporated water does us no good... we need the liquid form! One of the two entries of the tent is the designated cooking area. This is where we dig a pit for the stove. When preheating the gasoline cooking stove this gives us more space between the flames and the tent fabric. Regardless, during preheating we always open the tent door to minimize the risk of the tent catching fire. The black garbage bag contains snow we use to make water for drinking water and cooking. You need a lot of snow to make water! Despite the delicious meals, I lost quite a few kilos ... I weighed myself this morning... 2 weeks after leaving the area I am still 3 kg lighter compared to when we started the trip! Hauling heavy sleds and living in cold conditions for more than a week really makes you burn through calories.

I especially like the images where you can also see the moonlit mountains and snow outside. Inside the tent the light is reddish; the red tent acts like a red filter.

Our cabin at Hotel Folldal Fjellstue before entering the area with the muskoxen, Folldal, Norway. This cabin is about 200 years old. It does not have plumbing, but is does have electricity now. Quite the atmosphere... our kind of place! The owners of the hotel and surrounding cabins are Randi and Jens Hammer.
