Asian wildlife: Mongolian gazelles (Procapra gutturosa) in tall grass, Khentii, Mongolia. In the last light of the day we spotted a group of Mongolian gazelles. I decided to try and get close. Amazingly I got away with it... but it took some time of course. I got with 25 m or so while the animals continued to eat the tall grasses. I only had a thin glove liner on my right hand and I think it was about -25C (-13F) with a breeze... I can't remember my hand ever hurting so much when warming it back up. We made it back to the ger just before complete darkness... It was clear we had been pushing it a bit as a search party had gone out looking for us. Fortunately they returned about 15 minutes later and everyone was relieved.

Montana wildlife: Red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), Maclay Flat, Missoula, Montana, USA. Yesterday I was looking for an owl that my friend Ronni told me about. I did not find the owl, but then this red squirrel was curious about me and I was happy to come home with an image like this.

Travel: Solar power at Nara's winter camp along Onon river, near Norovlin, Khentii, Mongolia
Travel: Solar power at Nara's winter camp along Onon river, near Norovlin, Khentii, Mongolia. The large solar panel generates sufficient electricity for light inside the ger at night, a form of mobile or cell phone that looks and operates as a land line, and a limited amount of TV or video in the evening. The small 4W solar panel (Voltaic) is mine (see the second photo below for detail). I bought it specifically for this trip and used it to recharge my camera batteries as I expected to be off the grid for about 10 days with very low temperatures which cause the batteries to drain very quickly. The solar panel worked very well. With the sun we experienced it easily charged one DSLR camera battery per day, even with -4F (-20C) as the high, and I never ran low with five batteries in total per camera. Make sure though you make it face south when you leave it for the day; you want to maximize the exposure to the sun and of course you can't adjust it if you are gone all day.... It is also a good idea to keep it up high where goats and other hungry or inquisitive critters can't reach it.
