Asian wildlife: Takhi or Przewalski's horse (Equus ferus ssp. przewalskii), Mongolia
Asian wildlife: Takhi or Przewalski's horse (Equus ferus przewalskii), Hustai Nuruu National Park, Töv, Mongolia. Endangered (IUCN, 2013). The Przewalski's horse is the only remaining truly wild horse in the world. The Przewalski's horse should not be confused with free-roaming horses descended from domesticated ancestry; those are feral horses rather than a true wild horse species or subspecies. The Przewalski's horse can hybridize with domestic horses but there are distinct genetic differences with domesticated horses and the Przewalski's horse is not the ancestor of modern domestic horse. That was likely another subspecies, potentially the now extinct Tarpan (Equus ferus ferus). After the Przewalski's horse went extinct in the wild in 1960s, it only remained in zoos. It was reintroduced into the wild in 1992 in Hustai Nuruu National Park through a collaboration of the Mongolian government with a Dutch NGO and the Dutch government. Since 2003 the National Park is managed by a Mongolian NGO rather than the Mongolian government; the Hustai National Park Trust. The reintroduction and accompanying programs for livestock herders in the buffer zone and investments to ensure the long term sustainability of the National Park were a 20 year long effort. It can be considered a success with about 270 individuals in Hustai Nuruu National Park alone in 2013. There are now also two other wild populations in Mongolia and one in China.

Travel: The Russian made Furgon 4 WD van in Ikh Nart Nature Reserve, Dornogovi, Mongolia
Travel: The Russian made Furgon 4 WD van in Ikh Nart Nature Reserve, Dornogovi, Mongolia. This is not a luxurious vehicle, and it is a good thing our driver was also a mechanic, but the high clearance, short wheel base, and 4WD of the Furgon got us through some very challenging conditions, mostly high snow banks. The engine is situated in the center of the vehicle next to the driver.... handy because you don't have to exit into the cold to access the engine! It is also not a fast vehicle, but if you know how to operate it and repair it it can go places where a landcruiser or many other cars cannot go... a landcruiser high centers on snow much quicker... we experienced it!

Asian wildlife: Corsac fox (Vulpes corsac), NW of Choyr, Tov, Mongolia. This was my first sighting of a corsac fox; incredibly pretty in its winter fur!

Asian wildlife: Argali rams (Ovis ammon) running, Ikh Nart, Dornogovi, Mongolia
Asian wildlife: Argali rams (Ovis ammon), Ikh Nart Nature Reserve, Dornogovi, Mongolia. Near threatened (IUCN, 2013). These animals were out of sight behind a rocky outcrop. When they heard us they scurried up the larger rocky outcrop that was behind them. Then they took a minute or so to look back at us (see next blog posting), and then they moved on, quickly disappearing behind the rocky outcrop. I was fortunate to be able to create a few images. Argali are the largest species of wild sheep.
