We jacked up the vehicle, placed sand under the wheels, repeated the process with more sand, and then put some planks under the wheels and removed sand from under the center of the vehicle so it could gain some momentum. That did the trick... but it took some time. A good reminder for why we wanted the van to be 4x4 and high clearance... and yes... this location is a long way from help...
