Sick muskox calf (Ovibos moschatus) in winter, Dovrefjell, Norway. These calves were bleeding from the mouth. One looked particularly sickly and it also ruminated or rested much longer than the other members of the herd. The muskoxen in this area suffer from several diseases including pneumonia caused by different strains of Pasteurellaceae, respiratory illness probably caused by Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae, and contagious ecthyma due to Parapoxvirus ovis. Calf mortality is said to be very high, causing substantial population fluctuations and, in recent years, a decline with the potential for extirpation. The Dovrefjell herd lives at the edge of their climatic range and they may be particularly susceptible to diseases. However, other herds further north are also suffering from fatal diseases, likely as a result of climate change.
