Road ecology blog: Run-off is directly deposited in stream, Brazil

August 06, 2015  •  Leave a Comment

Multi-functional culvert, SP-270 about 70 km south east of Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, Brazil. Note that the run-off from the road (including sediments and pollutants) is directed into the stream.

It is far better to have runoff infiltrate into the soil as this:

1. Reduces peak flows and flooding downstream.

2. Filters out most of the pollutants and sediments so that they do not end up in the stream.
