Road ecology blog: Entrance to the park (east side) and night time closure, Parque Estadual 'Carlos Botelho', São Paulo, Brazil.
Over the last few years this road was upgraded from a dirt road to a paved road. The road cuts through one of the largest remaining patches of Atlantic forest. It is an area with sensitive species, including jaguar (Panthera onca). The road is opening again around this time, but there is a gate and a check point with armed guards on both sides of the park and the road will be closed at night. These measures are designed to reduce poaching and reduce the probability that animals will be hit on the road.
