Road Ecology blog: Seasonal barriers and pittfalls for common toads, The Netherlands

April 02, 2014  •  Leave a Comment

Seasonal amphibian barriers for common toads (Bufo bufo), Soest, The Netherlands. Note that there are pitfalls (buckets) on the safe side of the fence. The sticks in the buckets allow non target species such as small mammals and invertebrates to escape. Volunteers check the buckets at night during the migration season and bring the toads to the other side of the road.

Image below: At this location the common toads approach the road in high numbers in a short section (concentrated in 20 m road length). The number of common toads (Bufo bufo), common fogs (Rana temporaria), and green frogs (Pelophylax spp.) that are saved by the volunteers at this location over the last 14 days is shown on this website.
