Young white-tailed deer buck (Odocoileus virginianus) displaying flehmen reaction

Young white-tailed deer buck (Odocoileus virginianus) displaying flehmen reaction. This behavior allows the animals to better smell pheromones. In this case the buck is sniffing urine from a doe. Drawing back their lip helps expose the vomeronasal organ (or Jacobson's organ) which detects scent molecules, including those that relate to the presence or absence of estrus in a doe.
