Road striping to reduce traffic speed and to communicate that the road is to be shared with bicyclists, Lage Vuursche, The Netherlands. In the old days this would have been a two lane road with striping in the middle of the road leaving no or very little space for bicyclists. The current striping configuration is different. There now are two narrow lanes, one on each side of the road, primarily intended for bicyclists. Motorized traffic can use these narrow bicycle lanes when a vehicle approaches from the other direction, as incated by the intermittent striping. However, the striping pattern now suggests that motorized vehicles are a "guest" when they go past the stripes, leading to greater respect and safety for bicyclists.The striping also makes for a narrower lane for motorized traffic and reduces traffic speed, especially when a vehicle approaches from the other direction.
