Bison (Bison bison), North Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, USA. These are descendents from a herd that was brought to the Greater Grand Canyon region in the early 1900’s to experiment with hybridization with cattle. The herd was sold to the state of Arizona in 1926. Arizona Game and Fish Department is responsible for the management of the herd. In 2000, the bison escaped from their enclosure in the Grand Canyon Game Preserve (GCNP) in House Rock Valley and migrated up onto the Kaibab Plateau. Since then the bison have been moving between the Kaibab National Forest and Grand Canyon National Park, but they still return to House Rock Valley in the summer to rut. In recent years fewer bison leave Grand Canyon National Park and stay there throughout the year.
